Justin Timberlake’s License Suspended at DWI Hearing, Judge Warns Lawyer

SAG HARBOR, N.Y. — Justin Timberlake appeared virtually at a Friday hearing for his driving while intoxicated (DWI) case. The judge announced that the pop star’s driver’s license would be suspended and criticized his lawyer for “irresponsible” comments.

Timberlake, 43, wore a black collared shirt during his video conference from Antwerp, Belgium. Sag Harbor Justice Carl Irace reprimanded Timberlake’s attorney, Edward Burke Jr., for comments made at the last court hearing. The judge stated these comments seemed like an attempt to influence the case before it began.

The judge warned that a gag order might be issued if the attorney continued to make such remarks.

Incident Details

The hearing in Sag Harbor, New York, occurred over a month after Timberlake was arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving. This happened early on a Tuesday morning in the affluent Hamptons area of Long Island.

The singer claimed he had only “one martini” before being pulled over. He pleaded not guilty, and his attorney, Burke Jr., said, “I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations. I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office.”

Timberlake was driving a gray Florida-registered BMW when he was stopped around 12:15 a.m. on Madison Street and Middle Line Highway. He was initially pulled over for driving through a stop sign and not staying on the right side of the road, according to the criminal complaint.

Police Report

Once police spoke to Timberlake, they realized he was not fit to drive, according to the complaint by Sag Harbor Village Police Officer Michael Arkinson.

The report noted that Timberlake had bloodshot and glassy eyes, a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, slow speech, and unsteady footing. He performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.

Officer Arkinson quoted Timberlake as saying, “I had one martini and I followed my friends home.” Timberlake also declined to be tested for impairment, reportedly telling police, “No, I’m not doing a chemical test.”

NBC News legal analyst Danny Cevallos said, “A refusal can be introduced at trial to establish conscious evidence of guilt. It is the predicate for a revocation of driving privileges.”

Timberlake had been at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor and was heading to a friend’s house when he was pulled over by police, according to a source close to him.

The next conference is set for August 9, which Timberlake is not required to attend. Another hearing will take place on September 13, where he may be required to appear.
