Charlize Theron is confident that “The Old Guard 2” will be released soon. The Oscar-winning actress explained that the sequel has faced delays, partly due to changes at Netflix.
“Netflix went through quite a changeover,” Theron said at her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party. “Our post-production shut down about five weeks into it.”
The movie, which wrapped filming two years ago, has also been affected by the actors and writers strikes. Despite these setbacks, Theron never feared the movie would be shelved.
“They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it,” she said. “We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.”
The first “Old Guard” was released in 2020 and was a hit, reaching 72 million households in its first four weeks. The movie is based on Greg Rucka’s comic book and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.
Theron stars as Andy, the leader of a group of immortals (Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli) whose secret existence is threatened by a pharmaceutical titan.
The sequel is directed by Victoria Mahoney and features new cast members Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, alongside returning stars Theron, Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
“It’s really good,” Theron said. “It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”
In May 2023, “Old Guard” producer Marc Evans hinted that the series could become a trilogy. “There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy,” he told Variety.
Apart from her movie career, Theron is also involved in dance. She recently opened The Six Compound dance studio in Burbank. “I’m on the dance circuit with my kids,” she said.

“It felt like something that I could give back. It’s important for young people to have space where they can dream and escape from their real world. It’s escapism. We want to be more inclusive and think outside of the box of what it means to be a dancer.”
