Exploring the Dark Side of Fame: Chappell Roan’s Journey in 2024

In 2024, Chappell Roan became a sensation in the music industry. After a decade of hard work, she achieved fame at an impressive speed, earning recognition as a true “Femininominon.” But with this fame came a new set of challenges that many don’t often see.

Recently, Chappell shared her frustrations on TikTok, not with new music, but with her experience of dealing with certain fans. These fans, feeling overly familiar with her because they love her music, often crossed personal boundaries.

They demanded her time and attention, assuming they had a right to it just because they supported her career.

This sparked a mixed reaction. Some fans criticized her, arguing that she owes her success to them and should be more accommodating. But as someone who has faced a similar, though much smaller, situation, I completely understand where Chappell is coming from.

To clarify, I’m not as famous as Chappell Roan. I work as a gaming YouTuber, creating comedy videos about video games, hosting live streams, and sometimes playing Dungeons and Dragons. My level of fame is such that I can often go unnoticed in public, but if I’m attending an event, I’m sure to be recognized.

As a smaller creator, my encounters with fans are usually positive. When someone recognizes me, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Meeting fans in person, especially during meet and greet sessions, is heartwarming. These moments remind me that behind the screen are real people who enjoy my content.

However, I can’t imagine the exhaustion Chappell must feel when strangers constantly demand her attention. I’m tired after one event; how much more overwhelming it must be for her when she can’t even step outside without being approached.

What’s even more challenging is dealing with fans who cross the line into abuse, harassment, or stalking. I’ve had fans upset because I didn’t respond to every message.

I’ve experienced uncomfortable situations where fans hugged me and whispered unsettling things in my ear. In extreme cases, I’ve had to involve the police due to constant, threatening messages or fans showing up at events, acting as if they know me personally.

This issue of parasocial relationships—where fans feel a one-sided connection with creators—is a frequent topic of discussion in the YouTube community.

Every few years, creators need to remind fans that these relationships are not real and can lead to misunderstandings and harmful behavior.

For many creators, Chappell’s words in her second TikTok hit home: “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to people who are […] famous or a little famous or whatever.

I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, the career field I’ve chosen – that does not make it okay.”

The idea that fame comes with the obligation to be constantly available to fans is a misconception. The truth is, it’s an added burden that creators didn’t ask for, don’t get compensated for, and often costs them financially, mentally, and emotionally.

The time and effort spent on dealing with these situations can take away from their actual work, the work they do get paid for.

Chappell Roan gets paid to make music, not to deal with the demands of fans who don’t respect her boundaries. If we want her to continue creating music, we need to respect her space and understand that she might not always be able to stop for a photo or chat. Her well-being should come first, so she can keep making the music we love.
