After doing his first shows outside the US in Canada this week – playing in Ontario for the Heather Winterstein Foundation for Indigenous youth and at Ottawa’s Bluesfest – Jelly Roll performed in Toronto and brought out AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys.
They sang together the big 1999 hit “I Want It That Way,” while the audience sang along: “You are my fire/The one desire/Believe when I say/I want it that way.” This happened after Jelly Roll and AJ McLean were seen together at the 2024 BMG Pre-Grammy Party in Los Angeles, California, earlier this year.
During Wednesday’s show, Jelly Roll also thanked the audience. “I can’t tell you how amazing this was. I thought they would never let me into Canada. I couldn’t have asked for a better welcome,” he said, then added, “I really like Toronto music. I wanted to come to [History] or the Mod Club. That was my dream, to go to one of those two.”

In June, the CMT winner talked about his problems booking shows in other countries because of his past crimes. He’s said before that he’s been in jail about 40 times, primarily for drug-related charges.
When talking to Jon Bon Jovi for Interview magazine, the country singer said, “It’s funny, America has finally agreed to let me leave and give me a passport, but some countries won’t let me come because of my crimes. We’re working on that. I think it’s going to work out for me.
