Shrek 5’ Confirmed for July 2026 (Original Cast Returns!)

“Shrek is coming back to theatres — for real. DreamWorks Animation said on Tuesday that a fifth Shrek movie would be in theatres next summer, just in time for the 25th birthday of the first Shrek movie. “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theatres on July 1, 2026,” the animation company wrote on X.

They also said that Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz would play their old roles as Shrek the Ogre, his wife Princess Fiona, and his friend Donkey.

Walt Dohrn will direct “Shrek 5”. He worked as a writer and artist on “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” and led the story team on “Shrek Forever After,” Variety reported. “Trolls” maker Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri will help make it, and Brad Ableson will help direct. They haven’t said what the story will be about yet.

The first Shrek movie, which came out in 2001, is based on William Steig’s 1990 picture book. It tells the story of an ogre who leaves his swamp to see the world. According to Box Office Mojo, the popular funny fantasy movie won the first-ever Oscar for animated feature and made more than $484 million worldwide.

Besides its sequels, “Shrek” also led to two “Puss in Boots” spin-off movies. The latest one made more than $12 million in the US in December 2022 (6.7% of its total money) and was also up for an Oscar for animated feature. DreamWorks hasn’t said if Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss in Boots, will be in “Shrek 5.”

In a June talk with Collider, Murphy talked about the fifth Shrek movie. He said the project started “four or five months ago.” “I recorded the first part, and we’ll be doing it this year. We’ll finish it up,” Murphy said, hinting at a movie about his character, Donkey.

After DreamWorks’ Tuesday announcement, many Shrek fans showed excitement online.

“I’m seated. the theater workers are scared and asking me to leave because it’s ‘not July 1, 2026 yet’ but I’m just too seated,” one person replied to DreamWorks’ X announcement.

“it’s always darkest (2024 elections) before the dawn (Shrek 5 in 2026),” another wrote.
